Telling the time in German

Asking the time is easy: Wie spät ist es? Understanding the answer takes a little more care.

halb looks forward

This is the classic mistake. halb sieben does not mean "half seven" in the British sense:

  • Es ist halb sieben. — It's 6:30 (half way to seven).

German counts the half hour towards the next hour. Viertel nach and Viertel vor work like English: Viertel nach zehn is 10:15, Viertel vor fünf is 4:45.

Uhr or Stunde?

  • die Uhr is a clock or watch, and the "o'clock" in a time: Es ist drei Uhr.
  • die Stunde is an hour as a length of time: Der Film dauert zwei Stunden.

The 24-hour clock

Timetables, tickets and official times use the 24-hour clock: Der Zug fährt um 18 Uhr. In conversation, people mostly say the 12-hour version. Use um for "at" with a time: um acht Uhr.
