Phone and internet words in German

A lot of this vocabulary is borrowed from English, which makes it easy, with a few traps.

das Handy

The most famous false friend: das Handy is a mobile phone. It doesn't mean "handy".

English words, German genders

Borrowed words still get an article, and you have to learn it:

  • das Internet, die App, die E-Mail, der Laptop, das Video

German-only words

  • der Akku — a phone or laptop battery
  • das WLAN — Wi-Fi
  • das Ladegerät — charger

anrufen is separable: Ich rufe dich später an.
