Shopping in German

A few set phrases get you through almost any shop or market.

Asking and ordering

  • Was kostet das? — How much is that?
  • Haben Sie das in Blau? — Do you have this in blue?
  • Ich hätte gern ein Kilo Äpfel. — I'd like a kilo of apples.

Ich hätte gern is the polite way to ask for something; Ich will ("I want") sounds blunt.

Paying

  • bar — in cash
  • mit Karte — by card

Cash is still common in German-speaking countries, so Kann ich mit Karte zahlen? is a useful question to ask before you order.

When you're done

Noch etwas? (Anything else?) – Das ist alles, danke.
