German prepositions
Prepositions are short and frequent, and they rarely map one-to-one onto English.
"to": nach or zu?
- nach for towns and countries, and for nach Hause: Ich fliege nach Spanien.
- zu for people and most places: Ich gehe zum Arzt.
seit and the present tense
For something that started in the past and is still going on, German uses seit with the present tense:
- Ich wohne seit zwei Jahren hier. — I've lived here for two years.
Saying für zwei Jahre here would mean you're staying for two years.
They change the article
Every preposition decides the case of what follows, which is why you see mit dem Bus but für den Bus. At A1, learn them in short phrases; the example sentences are a good start.
