These are the places you'll look for, meet in front of and ask the way to.

Going somewhere

The preposition depends on the place:

  • in for buildings you go into: ins Kino, in den Park
  • zu for places you go to: zur Post, zum Bahnhof

ins is short for in das, zum for zu dem, zur for zu der.

Familiar words

Many are close to English: das Restaurant, das Museum, der Park, die Bank. The articles still have to be learned.

Not what it looks like

die Post is the post office. der Platz is a square in a town, and also a seat or a place.
