More common German verbs

This deck adds the next set of everyday verbs after the first one.

Putting things down

English "put" becomes two verbs, depending on how the thing ends up:

  • legen — lying flat: Leg das Buch auf den Tisch.
  • stellen — standing upright: Stell die Milch in den Kühlschrank.

Their partners liegen and stehen describe where something already is.

finden for opinions

finden means "to find", and also "to think" when you give an opinion:

  • Wie findest du den Film? — What do you think of the film?

A false friend

bekommen means "to get" or "to receive", never "to become". Ich bekomme ein Steak is what you say when ordering.
