Jobs in German

Was sind Sie von Beruf? — "What do you do?" — comes up in almost every first conversation.

No article

English says "I'm a teacher". German leaves out the article:

  • Ich bin Lehrer. / Ich bin Lehrerin.

Female forms

Most jobs add -in for a woman, sometimes with an umlaut:

  • der Lehrer → die Lehrerin
  • der Arzt → die Ärztin

The deck shows both forms on each card.

A false friend

der Chef is your boss, not a cook. A cook or chef is der Koch.
