Adverbs of frequency in German

Where they go

In German the verb is always the second element of a statement. If you start with an adverb, the subject moves behind the verb:

  • Ich nehme manchmal den Bus.
  • Manchmal nehme ich den Bus.

Never Manchmal ich nehme: that's the most common word-order slip for English speakers.

How often

einmal, zweimal, dreimal plus pro Woche or am Tag: Ich schwimme zweimal pro Woche.

schon and noch

  • schon — already: Ich habe schon gegessen.
  • noch — still: Bist du noch bei der Arbeit?
