Family words in German

Talking about your family is one of the first conversations you'll have in German.

Two words with two meanings

  • der Mann means "man" and also "husband": Ihr Mann ist Lehrer.
  • die Frau means "woman", "wife", and is also the title "Ms": Frau Schmidt.

Words English doesn't have

  • die Eltern (parents) only exists in the plural.
  • die Geschwister is one handy word for "brothers and sisters". Hast du Geschwister? is the usual way to ask.

Possessives follow gender

"My" changes with the noun after it: mein Vater, meine Mutter, mein Kind. Learning each family word with its article tells you which form to use.
