Days, months and seasons in German

Most of these words will look familiar: the months in particular are almost the same as in English.

They're all masculine

Every day, month and season is a der word: der Montag, der Mai, der Winter. One less thing to memorise.

am or im?

  • Days take am: am Montag, am Wochenende.
  • Months and seasons take im: im Januar, im Sommer.

Spelling and false friends

  • Like all German nouns, days and months start with a capital letter.
  • Sonntag and Montag match Sunday and Monday, but Mittwoch literally means "midweek".
  • der Herbst is autumn; it's related to the English word "harvest".
  • To say something happens every Monday, add an -s and drop the capital: montags.
