Ordinal numbers and dates in German

Making ordinals

Add -te up to 19 and -ste from 20:

  • der zweite, der vierte, der zehnte
  • der zwanzigste, der einunddreißigste

Learn the irregular ones separately: erste, dritte, siebte.

Saying the date

  • Heute ist der dritte Oktober.
  • Mein Geburtstag ist am zwanzigsten Mai.

In writing, an ordinal is a number with a point: der 3. Oktober, 3.10. German dates always go day, month, year.

"Ago" comes first

German puts vor before the time: vor zwei Jahren — two years ago.
