Daily routine in German

Describing your day from getting up to going to bed teaches you two important patterns.

Separable verbs

Many everyday verbs have a prefix that moves to the end of the sentence:

  • aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben auf.
  • einkaufen → Wir kaufen am Samstag ein.

In the dictionary and in the deck they appear as one word.

Reflexive verbs

Some verbs need mich, dich, sich where English needs nothing:

  • sich anziehen → Ich ziehe mich an. — I get dressed.
  • sich duschen → Ich dusche mich.

Feierabend

der Feierabend is the end of the working day, and the free time after it. There's no single English word for it.
