Clothes in German

The words you need to get dressed, go shopping for clothes, and say what someone is wearing.

Singular in German

English says "trousers" and "jeans" as plurals. German says die Hose for one pair: Die Hose ist zu lang.

Wearing or putting on?

  • tragen — to be wearing: Er trägt ein weißes Hemd.
  • anziehen — to put on: Zieh deine Schuhe an!
  • ausziehen — to take off.

anziehen and ausziehen are separable verbs: the first part goes to the end of the sentence.

A false friend

der Rock is a skirt, not a rock. And die Mütze is a woolly hat or cap; a hat with a brim is der Hut.
