Animals in German

Many animal names are close to English: der Hund (hound), die Maus, der Elefant, der Löwe (lion).

A surprising relative

das Tier means any animal. It's the same old word as English "deer", which narrowed its meaning over time.

Animals don't essen

German has a separate verb for animals eating: fressen. Der Hund frisst sein Futter. Using it for a person is rude.

Plurals

Plurals in German are irregular, so the deck gives each one: der Vogel – die Vögel, die Maus – die Mäuse.
