Common French verbs
être and avoir first
These two are irregular and you'll need them everywhere:
| être (to be) | avoir (to have) | |
|---|---|---|
| je / j' | suis | ai |
| tu | es | as |
| il / elle | est | a |
| nous | sommes | avons |
| vous | êtes | avez |
| ils / elles | sont | ont |
Two ways to know
- savoir — to know a fact: Je ne sais pas.
- connaître — to know a person or place: Tu connais Anna ?
No "-ing" form
J'apprends le français means both "I learn French" and "I'm learning French".
-er verbs
Most verbs end in -er and are regular: je parle, tu parles, il parle. All three sound exactly the same.
