Learn French vocabulary

English speakers start French with a head start: restaurant, menu, question and thousands of other words are shared, thanks to centuries of borrowing. This section collects French words and phrases with their English meanings, pronunciation and an example sentence each, sorted by level.

How to use these decks

Each page explains one topic and ends with a flashcard deck. Add the deck to your own and Echoes schedules every card with the Leitner system: cards you know come back later, cards you forgot come back sooner, so your time goes to the words that actually need it.

If we correct a mistake in a card, the fix reaches everyone who has added the deck, and your review progress stays where it was.

Levels

The levels come from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which French exams such as DELF and TCF are built around. If you are just starting out, start with A1.
