The body in French
Saying where it hurts
The pattern is avoir mal à — to have pain at:
- J'ai mal à la tête. — My head hurts.
- J'ai mal au dos. — My back hurts.
- J'ai mal aux pieds. — My feet hurt.
à + le becomes au and à + les becomes aux.
"the", not "my"
With your own body, French uses the article where English uses "my": Je me brosse les dents (I brush my teeth), Lève la main (raise your hand).
An odd plural
l'œil (eye) becomes les yeux (eyes).
